Volkwagen’s most awaited pickup is finally here and available for sale at United Kingdom’s top dealer and exporter Jim Autos UK. With Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and pickups gaining popularity everyday, introduction of VW Amarok made eminent sense. VW wants to be world’s largest auto maker by 2018 and with Amarok pickup (or ute, bakkie or LCV) it has come one step closer to its stated aim. So important is the success of this vehicle to the Germans, that they had even built a mini makeshift town and named it Amarok Town. Complete with wooden walkways, street signs and cleverly designed themes throughout. It is among the very few vehicles that have earned five-star ANCAP safety rating, and its double cab also happens to have the largest load area dimensions in class.

The Volkswagen Amarok is a mid-size pickup truck built by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV). The Amarok range consists of single cab and double cab, combined with either rear-wheel drive or 4motion four-wheel drive, and is powered by Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engines.

Volkswagen incredible expertise in off-roading (think Touareg and its Dakar cars) had all been put to use in the Amarok. Having built so many performance cars (think Volkswagen R line, Audi, Bugatti, Bentley, etc.) over the years, the Germans certainly know a thing or two about ride and handling and they’ve applied some of that to the Amarok design.

The only problem is its meager availability. Its wordlwide demand exeeds its supply. Its demand is so high that VW cannot make enough of them and VW has to ration these country by country. 900 units allotted for UK for this year have all been claimed and next year VW has allotted 2000 units and they are certainly not going to be enough.

In addition to its bold and muscular looks and wide stance the Amarok measures up in other ways. Here are a few notable facts and figures. Voted the inaugural International Pick-Up of the year by the Van of the Year jury, it is the only pick-up with a choice of permanent or selectable 4MOTION all wheel drive, it has the largest load space in its class with 2.5 square metres and can accommodate a Euro pallet sideways, first pick-up to offer exhaust CO2 emissions below 200g/km, first pick-up range to offer smaller 2.0-litre, common rail TDI turbodiesel engines with outputs of 122PS and 163PS, but VW claims without any loss of performance, and the braked towing limited is a hefty 2,690kg.

The Amarok is a four door, five seater double cab and there are three trim levels, Startline more workhorse than leisure, the likely best selling Trendline for lifestyle and leisure use or the executive Highline version. Under the skin there is a purpose built ladder frame chassis for strength, durability and when needed easily reparable anywhere in the World. VW pointed out this is not a chassis which has been adapted from some other SUV model – it has to be strong and tough so it is purpose built and for added durability in all markets tough leaf springs supported by shock absorbers are used.

The running gear has electronic stability control incorporating anti-lock braking and off-road ABS, traction control, electronic differential lock, hill hold assist, hill descent control, trailer stability control and 4MOTION all wheel drive. The drive mode is selected by a single push button for two and four wheel drive and low ratio gears. A six speed manual gearbox is used and an automatic transmission option will become available shortly.

he 2.0-litre TDI engine is available with two power outputs. The 122PS TDI turbodiesel unit has 340Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,250 rpm, a zero to 62 mph time of 13.7 seconds, maximum speed of 100mph, and emissions of 199g/km. The most popular engine will be the 163PS Bi-Turbo TDI with 400Nm of torque from 1,500 to 2,000 rpm with zero to 62mph taking 11.1 seconds with a top speed of 112 mph and emissions of 209 g/km.

Inside the cab there is car-like refinement in its design and specification with electrically operated windows and air conditioning included. The interior has similar styling and indeed quality feel straight from the Touareg premium SUV. The most popular Trendline version has as standard equipment, central door locking, alarm, a full array of airbags, air conditioning, electrically operated windows and mirrors, cruise control, fog lights, multifunction computer, three seat rear bench seat, carpeting in the cabin, leather steering wheel gear knob and handbrake, daytime running lights, stereo sound system, front centre armrest, alloy 17-inch road wheels, full size spare wheel, integrated step in the rear bumper and four load lashing rings.

Off road the drivetrain technologies proved to be excellent and really easy to use. Such is the sophistication of these technologies that the Amarok is the only 4×4 I’ve ever driven where it is possible to drive down a very steep hill off road in neutral gear as the ABS off road brakes take over and allows the vehicle to just trickle down the hill. Once the off road and low ratio transmission modes have been engaged the electronic brain takes over and applies the brakes when needed. Not a recommended way of driving but this extreme situation was used to demonstrate just how capable and a safe off-roader it is.

As for fuel consumption, the 163PS unit will officially return 35.8mpg in the Combined Cycle and on test my driving returned 35.2mpg and that was also impressive.

Whether the Amarok is used as a workhorse or by the growing band of retail buyers returning to the lifestyle double-cab market for towing boats, caravans or trailers or for carrying sports equipment, it performs as well as it looks.

Engines

The Amarok is powered by a range of Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) common rail diesel engines, and Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) petrol engine.

The engine range consists of two 2.0L Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) common rail diesel engines which is taken from Golf, Jetta and Tiguan, it has been tuned for more torque but less power; the entry-level version produces 90 kW (122 PS; 121 hp) which develops a maximum torque of 340 N·m (250 lb·ft) from 2000 rpm. The top of the line bi-turbo version produces 120 kW (163 PS; 161 hp) which develops a maximum torque of 400 N·m (300 lb·ft) from 1500 rpm.

Fuel consumption in a combined cycle format is as low as 7.6 L/100 km (37 mpg-imp; 31 mpg-US) on the rear wheel drive variant to 8.1 L/100 km (35 mpg-imp; 29 mpg-US) on the 4Motion theoretically giving the Amarok a 1,000 km (620 mi) range before filling up for fuel.

Driveline

The Amarok has three drive concepts: rear wheel drive, Shiftable 4Motion and Permanent 4Motion. The Shiftable all wheel drive system can shift drive between the axles whereas the Permanent full time all wheel drive system distributes power through a Torque Sensing (Torsen) differential with a 40:60 ratio between the front and rear axles.
